Oddities – From My Perspective https://commonsensegma.com What I Learned in 75 Years Tue, 20 Nov 2018 22:22:20 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.6.2 Miraculous Humans https://commonsensegma.com/miraculous-humans/ Wed, 29 Aug 2018 20:24:39 +0000 http://commonsensegma.com/?p=200

Wow. Take a look at this image.  Actually, think about it.  How incredible is it that such a small brain can create such an enormous and wonderful thing? Ok. You may not consider a crane a wonderful thing…but how about the San Francisco bridge, the Empire State Building (built in 14 months), the pyramids, etc.  You get where I’m going with this, right?

It’s amazing to me what man can create with his brain! Brilliant music, outstanding art, unbelievable technology. When I was a child, the idea of a cell phone would have been laughable!  (Drum roll, please!) Nothing, however, comes close to man’s greatest creation–life itself!

I love to watch a roomful of toddlers playing and laughing. It brings me joy to watch these innocent little beings.  At the same time, I feel sadness. Some children will not be able to achieve their potential because of circumstances.  When I think about their future, I think of a tag line from Southern New Hampshire University: The world equally distributes talent, but doesn’t equally distribute opportunity. This is so true. What if everyone had equal opportunity? Would our prisons be empty? Would poverty be a thing of the past? Would we have fair and equitable laws and lawmakers?

Every day I watch the news on TV.  Rarely does a day go by when I don’t see a mug shot of some disheveled young man. At one time that person was a happy, playful child.

Where are all those incredible human beings who build giant cranes and make babies? Hopefully, they’re creating opportunities.

As I was on my way to the gym this morning, I saw this new sign and I was somewhat befuddled! Wow.  Classic vs. Modern church service. How would that go?  My mind tried to picture it. The only vision of classic church service I could think of was my own experience when I was young.  I was raised in the Presbyterian Church.  If you’re not familiar with our little sect, let me paint you a picture: Our services were rather formal, quiet and dignified. Yep. We are part of the frozen chosen. Everyone in the congregation sat erect and kept very quiet. No hand-clapping, rowdy versions of Shall We Gather at the River!

Self (I said to my brain), what would a modern service look like? I image people sitting on sleek, stainless steel benches with white fur-covered cushions. There are gigantic amps on either side of the stage blaring out the latest hit, “Yo, Dudes, Catch Me at the Pool!” The sanctuary would be aglow with cell phone lights being waved back and forth. Bang! The minister jumps out in a one-piece gold suit, so tight you’d think he was going scuba diving. He raps out the sermon with such enthusiasm, his golden dreadlocks are flopping around like snakes on the head of Medusa. In the congregation, skinny jeans and boots abound. Well, you get where I’m going with this.

It’s good to know we have choices.
